Reflections for march 16

Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Can you imagine not eating for 40 days? I read about fasting and how it teaches us self-control and humbles us. It boosts our cognitive performance, learning, and memory. It helps us overcome desires and helps us hear God’s voice. I was thinking about the idea that when we come to church for classes or services, we fast from everything else in our life to learn more. We get to take a break from everything. That touched my heart. It seemed so calming. The Prayer for Illumination asked God to comfort us in our sanctuary. Again, we get a chance to just sit down and listen to the music and sermon to see how we can keep growing with God. Jesus’ teachings provide a model for how we can live a good and faithful life. He guides us by showing us the path toward a life focused on God, and it helps us to overcome challenges in our everyday lives. I loved the lyrics in Only a Holy God that asked, “Who else could rescue me from my failing?” The answer was only a holy God. We learn each day about how God leads us and holds our hand to rescue us from our failings. The reflective prayers at the end of the service asked us some questions to reflect what we would like to thank Jesus for, who Jesus is to us, and who we would like to pray for. It got us to slow down and take in what we learned to start the next week. By following Jesus’ teachings, we can find comfort and strength in difficult times. Reflections from Deborah Kelly.
