Never be Afraid to Take the Last Brownie

Never be Afraid to Take the Last Brownie

There have been a number of times when I’ve been sitting with a group of Christians and there’s been some dessert in the middle of the table. At camps, conferences, events of different sorts, where there’s meals, there comes a time where people are chatting or even seriously discussing something… and there’s a plate of something sweet in the middle. I’ve noticed a pattern of engagement with this particular food. No one wants to take the last one. What I’ve watched happen again and again, is that when the group of dessert pieces diminishes, there comes a point where there is just one. At that moment, someone will pick up a knife or fork and split it. And then, after just a bit, someone else will pick up the utensil and do the same thing with the remainder. I’ve watched it go even one step past that… and then the last little bit remains. It just sits.      So, as I’ve watched the last lemon bar, the last miniature cupcake, the last brownie become lonelier, I’ve also watched the amount of time it takes before someone picks up the knife. It’s usually several minutes, usually around the time when there’s a subtle shift in the conversation, even a lull. And that’s when I reach in and take the last one.      Most of the time there’s a little gasp from a least one person (I’ve always thought this was probably the one who was looking for the knife). It carries a little tone of reproach, as if this wasn’t proper. Christians need more examples of being joyous than being proper. So, I encourage you to be bold, be joyous, relax and celebrate the goodness of God’s provision. Eat the last brownie. It will inspire and reassure your soul to “taste and see that the Lord is good.” Blessings, Geoff
