Introducing Our leaders

A few weeks ago you were introduced to a new group of Elders and Deacons as they were installed into their leadership responsibilities for our church. Each leader commits to a three-year term and can serve two consecutive terms. In the coming weeks, we would like you to meet our new leaders. Gwen Long After becoming a widow, five years ago, Gwen Long relocated from New Jersey to San Diego to be near her son and his family. In New Jersey she was a member of the First Baptism Church of South Orange where she served as a deaconess and choir member for many years. She is also a retired high school science teacher. After coming to San Diego, she was drawn to RB Community by the friendly, welcoming spirit. She became a member of the Heartstrings ministry and was invited to become a deacon. She believes that this is where God wants her to continue in service. Carol Asbury Carol Asbury was introduced to RB Community Church four years ago by Jinny Straeter. She has lived in San Diego most of her life. Carol’s mom died when she was 10 years old, and she went to live with an aunt and uncle in a one-bedroom apartment until she was 18. She was married for 43 years and has been a widow for 4 years. She enjoys spending time with her 3 children and 5 grandchildren. She had a 33-year career in the grocery business, taking on various positions. Her initial path was physical therapy, but she chose to prioritize her time with family and remain in San Diego rather than going to another city to pursue that career path. Carol is a passionate and active volunteer who has contributed time to the recent Food Packing Event, the Connections Committee, Team of Seven Greeters, getting food to families and seniors, visiting senior living homes to deliver cookies and sing Christmas Carols, helping serve The Chosen dinners, and being part of the Blue Zone event our church supported in the Spring. As a Deacon, she has delivered flowers to people and helped with Communion cleanup and information booth. Carol will be helping with Vacation Bible School this summer and working at the church front desk soon. She enjoys being with and serving the people at this church to make a difference. Paul Zimmerman Paul Zimmerman is a retired owner & manager of Navy shipyard services. His family joined RB Community in 1985. His wife, Cheryl, went on to be with the Lord in 2021. He has three married adult daughters who were all raised in our church. Two are still living in San Diego with families active in other Christian congregations. One daughter and her family live in the Indianapolis area. Paul served as a key crew leader during the Jimmy Carter Habitat for Humanity work project and served on the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors in the ‘90s. He served as an Elder with two separate congregations in his home State of Ohio. Paul is motivated in becoming a Deacon in a community outreach capacity.
